The addiction counselor course/ CASAC (Credentialed Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselor) training provides an in-depth overview of addiction, including the physiological, psychological, and social aspects of substance use disorders. This training is designed to equip individuals to understand the history and impact of substance use and its treatment in the United States—effective counseling services to individuals struggling with addiction.

Who should take Overview of Addiction?
The Overview of Addiction Counselor Training is an introductory CASAC training designed for individuals who are interested in pursuing a career as a substance use counselor or who are currently working in the addiction recovery field and need to meet the credentialing requirements of the New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS).
This course is also appropriate for individuals in related fields, such as social work, psychology, nursing, or mental health counseling, who want to expand their knowledge of substance use disorders and learn how to integrate addiction treatment into their practice.
To become a Certified Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) in New York State, individuals must complete 350 hours of training, including this Overview of Addiction course, 6,000 hours of supervised work experience, and pass a certification exam. Therefore, individuals interested in pursuing a career as a CASAC should consider taking this course as a first step in meeting the certification requirements.

I found the training to be not only interesting but informative and helpful. I love the recovery field; therefore, I enjoy learning and did well with the training. I also liked repeating the questions in the final exam because the repetitive question from previous tests helped me learn.
