Who should take Basic Knowledge of Substance Use Disorders?
The Basic Knowledge of Substance Use Disorders introductory CASAC training is designed for individuals who are interested in pursuing a career as an addiction counselor or who are currently working in the addiction recovery field and need to meet the credentialing requirements of the New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS).
This course is also appropriate for individuals in related fields, such as social work, psychology, nursing, or counseling, who want to expand their knowledge of substance use disorders and learn how to integrate addiction treatment into their practice.
To become a Certified Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) in New York State, individuals must complete 350 hours of training, including the Basic Knowledge of Substance Use Disorders course and 6,000 hours of supervised work experience, and pass a certification exam. Therefore, individuals interested in pursuing a career as a CASAC should consider taking this course as a first step in meeting the certification requirements.
You will receive 27 clock hours for taking our self-study, self-paced, addictions counselor online training.

Self-study training learning outcomes include gaining the knowledge of the following:
- The history and evolution of substance use, diagnosis, and treatment
- Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs
- effects of ATOD ingestion on the brain and body
- Signs and symptoms of substance use, including intoxication, tolerance, and withdrawal
- nicotine dependence; interventions, treatment, and nicotine replacement therapy (NRT)
I found the training to be not only interesting but informative and helpful. I love the recovery field; therefore, I enjoy learning and did well with the training. As a visual learner, I respond well to visual teaching; therefore, the pre-recorded videos and added resources benefited me. I could download the workbooks and follow along with the videos while taking notes. I also liked repeating the questions in the final exam because the repetitive question from previous tests helped me learn.

The OASAS-approved initial Basic Knowledge of Substance Use Disorders course provides aspiring addiction counselors with a foundational understanding of addiction and recovery, their impact on individuals and society, and the principles of effective treatment. This course will prepare you to grasp better the concepts presented in our Addiction Counselor Preparation Program (ACP) curriculum.
You can also use this training to satisfy renewal requirements of your addiction counselor credential through OASAS or NAADAC.
