1. Meet Eligibility Requirements:
- You must be at least 18 years old.
- Have a postgraduate degree and license.
- Undergo and pass a criminal background check.
2. Complete Required Education and Training:

3. Submit CASAC Application:
Submit a CASAC application, including the required documentation, to the Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS).
4. Obtain Professional Evaluations:
Have three professionals provide evaluations of your competency and ethical conduct. One of these evaluations must come from your current or most recent professional position.
5. Complete the CASAC Examination Registration:
After your application is approved, you will receive an approval letter with information on completing the CASAC Examination Registration form.
6. Pass the CASAC Examination:
Prepare for and successfully pass the CASAC examination.
7. Gain CASAC Certification:
Once you have met all the requirements and passed the examination, you will be awarded the CASAC certification, which allows you to practice as a Certified Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor in New York State.
