Benefits of Becoming a Certified Drug and Alcohol Counselor

According to research, most adults dislike their careers, and less than half of Americans report being satisfied with their current jobs. You’re more likely to experience resentment, fatigue, and burnout when you don’t enjoy your work. You may find yourself only providing the bare minimum, and the days, weeks, and years will drag on.

Wouldn’t it be great if work could provide you with the resources, financial security you need and a sense of profound fulfillment?

If you’re looking for a career that offers satisfaction, joy, and personal growth, consider alcohol addiction treatment or a substance abuse counseling certificte. These fields can be advantageous, from helping people learn new skills to collaborating with a passionate team. There are many rewards associated with substance abuse counseling.

Many perks come with the job title of substance abuse counselor. For one, each day on the job is different from the last, which helps to keep things interesting. Additionally, every client that comes through the door provides you with a new experience – whether it be transformative or a different story to add to the collection. When the work day ends, you’ll head home feeling like you made a difference in someone’s life – and that’s something special.

Keep reading to learn 5 of the many reasons drug and alcohol counselors have fulfilling careers.

1. Guiding others

Helping others can be an enriching experience. It feels good to give back and to know that your work makes a difference.

If you are in recovery, you may feel a responsibility to help others in the way you have been helped. You will probably be able to relate to some of your clients, and they will probably feel like they can relate to you. This can be a compelling connection.

2. Each day is exciting and new

Do you like having a predictable routine day in and day out? Or would you prefer to have a constantly changing job that provides new challenges every day? If you answered the latter, counseling might be the right profession.

As a counselor, you’ll continually grow and learn about yourself and others. No two days will look exactly alike because you’re working with different people every day – and we all know that no two people are the same. So, if you enjoy working with people and like having a job that’s always changing, counseling could be the perfect career for you.

3. Professional and Personal Development

As an addiction counselor, you often work with clients in situations outside your comfort zone. This can be stressful sometimes, but it is also an opportunity to grow and learn more about yourself and your work. By facing these challenges, you can become a better counselor and help more people in the long run.

4. Supportive working relationships

The supportive relationships and camaraderie that often develop among substance abuse counselors can be beneficial both professionally and personally. Because counselors constantly deal with sensitive issues, they often bond closely with their coworkers. These friendships can help reduce stress and positively impact your professional network.

5. Perpetual learning

If you’re the type of person who is always looking to learn more, then a career in counseling may be perfect for you. Counseling requires both practical and academic learning to be successful. Depending on your state, certification, and license, you will likely need to complete continuing education units every year.

Likewise, your job may also include training and workshops. You may be assigned a supervisor to consult about your cases and provide feedback on your struggles.

No matter what walk of life substance abuse counselors come from, they all want to help those struggling with use disorders.

Some find their passion because they are in recovery themselves and want to guide others to find the rewards of recovery.

Others may have had a complete change in career paths and decided to enter this field to help people.

Instructor-Led Review

I wanted just to take a second and say thank you.  Thank you for taking the time to do this, I think you are helping a lot of people understand the role. I’ll be transitioning into my new CASAC role in the next couple of months, thanks to Educational Enhancement CASAC Online.

— Ryan Kulkarni

CASAC Student

I found the CASAC training to be not only exciting but informative and helpful. I love the recovery field; therefore, I enjoy learning and do well with the training. As a visual learner, I respond well to visual teaching; therefore, the pre-recorded videos and added resources benefited me. I could download the workbooks and follow along with the videos while taking notes. I also liked repeating the questions in the final exam because the repetitive questions from previous tests helped me learn.

My drug counselor certification training with EECo has been an incredible journey, and I am so glad I have completed this program. I’ve been wanting to do this for so very long, but I couldn’t find a way to do it due to work conflicts. I am just so grateful that EECO’s self-paced hybrid training could accommodate my hectic schedule. Thank you so much! 🙂

This was a very comprehensive drug abuse counselor certification course. It covered every conceivable nuance related to being an addiction counselor. I say this as someone who has gone through the entire certification process once before and has spent a few years working in the field in various roles.
